African Mineral Standards

Set Point’s diversity comes full circle with African Mineral Standards(AMIS). As one of a small number of suppliers in the world that manufactures matrix matched reference materials, AMIS is one of an elite. AMIS manufactures and sells a range of matrix and grade matched reference materials, to exploration companies, mining companies and commercial laboratories. Reference materials are samples with known grades that are used to verify assay laboratory results, in particular for assay precision and for in-between laboratory bias. The AMIS range covers a wide variety of platinum, base metal, gold and uranium ore types.

Reference Materials are used to verify the results coming from assay labortories. Their use is an integral part of assay laboratory quality assurance and control, mine production control and mineral resource auditing.
Reference materials are tested by an international round robin group typically involving 20 to 30 laboratories, then certificated by Dr Barry Smee (http://www.geochemist.com), an independent Canadian geochemist. The majority of products are commissioned by mining companies, with surplus product being made available for general sale. AMIS products are used to monitor the accuracy of a single analysis of a sample of rock or ore. The material can be used for routine quality control, method development and for the calibration of equipment. Standards are made from large batches of rock sourced from mines or sample pulp reject material from assay laboratories.

The product sold is in packages of inert and finely ground rock. Product is available in Laboratory Packs containing 1kg of material or in Explorer Packs containing client specified weights of material from 50g up to 250g. Laboratory Packs are sealed bottles delivered in sealed foil pouches. Explorer Packs contain material in standard geochem envelopes placed into foil pouches that are nitrogen-flushed and vacuum-sealed. The recommended mean and “between Lab” standard deviations for these standards reflect the average results from inter-laboratory testing (round robins). Slight variations in analytical procedures between laboratories will reflect as slight biases to the recommended concentrations. Laboratories should, however, report results within the two standard deviation levels with a failure of less than 10%. The Divisional Managing Director of AMIS is Mike McWha. He is assisted by a team of dedicated staff members.
